Your options

What improvements could I make?

Every home is different, but there are several common ways of reducing heat loss and improving the energy efficiency of a property.

  • Loft & roof insulation

Heat rises, so insulating your loft is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to keep warmth in your home.

  • Wall insulation

Options include cavity wall insulation and internal wall insulation – the right choice depends on how your home was built.

  • Floor insulation

Insulating your floor can help reduce heat loss and cold draughts, making your home feel more comfortable.

  • Windows & glazing

Options include double or triple glazing, secondary glazing and draught-proofing to reduce heat loss and draughts.

Heritage homes

Older homes and conservation areas

Older and traditionally built homes can still be made warmer and more energy efficient. Getting the right guidance first is especially important if your home is listed, in a conservation area or has solid walls – the wrong materials or methods can cause damp, damage original features or need permissions you haven't applied for.

Before you start

  • Check permissionsSome work may need planning permission or listed building consent.

  • Use breathable materialsOn solid walls, they let moisture escape so damp doesn't build up.

  • Protect characterConsider internal wall insulation, secondary glazing and draught-proofing.

The bigger picture

Think about your home as a whole

You don't have to do everything at once, but looking at the bigger picture can help you make the best decisions for your home.

If scaffolding is going up for solar panels, it may be the perfect time to do other work such as roof repairs or roof insulation too.

Power Up can help you understand what to do, what order to do it in and which improvements work well together.
